What can I expect from a career in Civil Engineering Technology?
As the population of the country’s cities and towns grows, the need increases for additional highways, buildings, tunnels, bridges and water supply and sewage systems. The individuals who help build these systems are civil engineers, a specialized group of professionals called on to be involved with the design and construction of the infrastructure of the nation. More of these professionals are needed now and into the future.

Civil engineering technician’s work for construction, engineering and architectural firms and are often employed by state, city and federal government agencies.

How Do You Get Started?
In high school, be sure to take courses in English, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. Courses in CAD, business and shop will also help you prepare for this career. To be a good civil technologist or technician, you need strong math and science skills, particularly physics. You should be good at oral and written communication, and have excellent problem solving skills. You will need a keen eye for detail, well-developed organizational skills and an ability to work well with others.
You should enjoy doing work that requires taking a methodical approach, finding innovative solutions to problems and directing the work of others.

What does your program offer me?

A graduate is prepared to work with the surveyor or civil engineer in the performance of general engineering practices which may include design; drawing and interpreting working drawings; determining equipment, materials and labor required to complete a project; and performing various tests required for construction. Small class size allows our instructors to give plenty of one-on-one instruction. Students who graduate from Northwest Mississippi Community College's Civil Technology program receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree or a certificate in civil technology (complete a minimum of 32 semester credit hours in the program).

What about employment?
Civil engineering technicians work for construction, engineering, and architectural firms and are often employed by state, city, and federal government agencies, wastewater treatment system plants, mapping agencies. They work with other employees at all levels including engineers, surveyors, supervisors, managers, and skilled trade workers who generally are supervised by experienced civil engineers. Technicians may instruct or supervise other workers. Working conditions for civil engineering technicians vary.  They may work outdoors at construction or survey sites, at indoors in well lighted and ventilated offices, and/or in testing labs.
