Stimulus Funding - American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
Northwest Mississippi Community College was awarded $1,194,542 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. ARRA funds are part of the economic stimulus package enacted by Congress to help stabilize state budgets and create jobs. Governor Haley Barbour provided funds to Mississippi’s community and junior colleges from discretionary funds included under the State Fiscal Stabilization Act (SFSF). The awarding of these funds helped to offset the need to raise tuition and fees at NWCC for the 2009-2010 school year. At NWCC, these funds are being utilized to assist in providing academic-based scholarships to in-state students and to assist in meeting the cost of utilities at the college's three campuses.
In addition to SFSF funds, NWCC received ARRA funding for the 2009-2010 fiscal year through the Federal Work-Study program and the Workforce Investment Act. NWCC received an award of $69,902 from Federal Work-Study funds and $565,000 from Workforce Investment Act funds. These funds are being used to supplement the programs currently ongoing at the college.
During the 2010-2011 fiscal year, NWCC received ARRA funding through the SFSF Government Services Fund as well as from the SFSF Education Fund. NWCC received $896,969 in Government Services Funds and $931,531 in Education Funds. The awarding of these funds helped to minimize the increase in tuition and fees at NWCC for the 2010-2011 school year. At NWCC, these funds are being utilized to assist in providing academic-based scholarships to in-state students and to assist in meeting the cost of utilities at the college’s three campuses.
