FAQs - NURSING PROGRAM (RN)
- Do I need the ACT even though I have a degree? Yes. All applicants need an ACT on file with NWCC.
- Do I need the ACT even though I am over age 21? Yes. All applicants need an ACT on file with NWCC.
- How do I register for the TEAS test? Once you have an ACT score of 19 or above on file with NWCC, then you can come to the main nursing office to schedule the TEAS test. Scheduling of the TEAS is only done in person in the main office of the Division of Nursing on the Senatobia campus. Bring a money order for $40 made payable to NWCC, schedule the date and time, and receive a ticket for your scheduled test.
- What is the TEAS test and is it required? The TEAS test is the required admission test for our nursing school. TEAS stands for Test of Essential Academic Skills. You are only required to take the math and reading sections. The math section has 45 items over 56 minutes, and the reading section has 40 items over 50 minutes. Calculators are not allowed during this test. For more information about the test, go to this website: http://www.atitesting.com/global/students/teas-faq.aspx
- What do I need to bring with me on the day of the TEAS? You need to bring a picture ID and your admission ticket for the test.
- What happens if I can’t come on the day I had originally scheduled? If you just don’t show up, then you forfeit your money and will be required to pay again when rescheduling the TEAS. If you know ahead of time, call or visit the main nursing office (662-562-3283) to reschedule to not lose your money.
- Can I just show up on the day of the TEAS in case there is an empty seat? No. An admission ticket is required to take the TEAS.
- When will I know my results? You will be able to see your results and print out a report form at the end of the test.
- How is the TEAS exam graded and how is it scored? The TEAS test is computer generated and graded. It is graded based on the national average for the sections of the test for that testing period.
- How often can I take the TEAS? You are only allowed to take the TEAS once each admission period. The admission periods are October 1-Febuary 28 and March 1-September 30.
- Are there any pre-requisites for this program? Yes. We require A & P I with the corresponding lab and A & P II with the corresponding lab to be completed before sitting in your first nursing class. You may apply, take the TEAS, and be accepted without having these courses completed, but they must be completed before attending your first nursing class. College algebra is also required before entering your first nursing class unless you have a score of 19 in the math section of the ACT. In the event that you have a 19 or above in the math section of the ACT, you are required to have College Algebra taken with or before your second semester (Freshman II) in the nursing program.
- Will my general credits transfer from the other schools I have attended? The registrar is the only person on campus who can tell you if your credits transfer. You can call or go to the registrar’s office to inquire about transfer credits. Do not wait until the week of registration to do this or be prepared for a lengthy wait time. The registrar’s office phone numbers are 662-562-3219 and 662-562-3220.
- Will my nursing credits transfer from other schools I have attended? This will be evaluated on an individual basis by the admissions committee based on the course descriptions and content compared to the course descriptions and content of the courses offered by this program. For more help with this, contact the transfer coordinator, Barbara Manning at bwmanning@northwestms.edu or 662-562-3286.
- If I have already completed all of the pre-requisites and co-requisites listed in the catalog for this program, can I complete the program early or take more than one nursing course at a time? No. Regardless of how many total college credits you may have, what other degrees you may have, or time constraints you may be experiencing, the nursing courses are only offered in the order listed and only during the spring and fall semesters. You are only allowed to complete one at a time and must maintain a minimum of 12 hours/credits (full-time status) each semester even if you have completed all of the pre- and co-requisites listed in the catalog.
- Can I take more than one nursing course at the same time? No. You are only allowed to take the nursing courses in the order they are listed in the catalog.
- Do you have summer classes, night classes, or offer a part-time program? At this time, the nursing courses are only offered during the spring and fall semesters during the day.
- When will I know if I have been admitted to the program? You should receive an acceptance or denial letter by mail within one month of the deadline for the semester you have applied. If you have questions on how to improve your status to be reconsidered, you should contact the admissions committee coordinator, Dianne Scott at rdscott@northwestms.edu or 662-562-3455, to have your file reviewed.
- How can I get on the waiting list? There is not a waiting list for this program. We only accept applicants through our competitive admission criteria.
- What are the deadlines for my application, TEAS, and transcripts to be considered for admission? The deadline for all paperwork to be submitted and the TEAS test to be taken is March 1st for fall and October 1st for spring. (Ex: If you are applying for Fall 2010, the deadline is March 1, 2010.)
- Do I need to have my transcripts sent to the nursing school? You do not need to do anything; your transcripts are already in our computers. If you attended school somewhere else, you should have an official transcript from each school sent to the registrar’s office at NWCC. It never hurts to have an additional copy sent directly to the nursing school to decrease the processing time of your application.
- How do I get accepted into the nursing program? First, you must have a 19 or higher on your ACT. Once that has been established, you can register to take the TEAS and apply for the program. If you are not currently a student at NWCC, you must also apply for NWCC. There are 2 separate applications, one for the school and one for the nursing program. All transcripts should be sent to NWCC. You will have a file started in the nursing office that will be reviewed by the admission committee. Your GPA will be calculated based only on the courses listed in the catalog as pre- and co-requisites for the program. You will get points for your ACT score, TEAS math score, TEAS reading score, and your calculated GPA. The points will then be totaled. All applicants will be listed by total points, and the ones with the most points will be accepted each semester.
